UNDER THE SEA

With the skulls, bones and sword, I would almost think that she was an evil mermaid. I love how you made her hair like mist. This whole piece is really good.

Great quote, and nice drawing!

loverly artwork there :)
this is why you're no longer a fashion illustrator... you have to draw them with the clothes ON :)

Very nice job!...love the darkness of it...

There is certainly a very eerie feeling here...she looks like she lures sailors to their death beneath the sea. I love the murky atmosphere with the drifting currents you've created.

Sharks are frightening, but this seductive temptress is nothing to be trifled with.

It is fantastic! Very atmospheric and moody and my next favorite after little children lost in the forest. There is a wonderful storyteller in you – it shines!

She's not evil or good...she just is. But so are rattlesnakes.
:) Don't mess with them and for the most part they won't mess with you.

Thank you Rrramone, I think you must have gotten it.

Rikki
Also I live in the middle of red-neck country, so there isn't much work for a fashion illustrator here:)))

TXArtcGal, cool!!!

Carla
Ah... I think in this case it's the sailors that lure themselves, sometimes there is a big difference between fantasy and reality.
(Notice...we are talking about a mermaid here!!! hehehe!)

Thank you, thank you Alina Chau!!!

Glad you liked it Dee! Thanks for the comment:)

Lazy lazy me......hehehe! It was just plain quicker and easier to leave it all misty like. I wanted it to feel like a current was moving and I wanted to direct your eye back into the painting... so the hair did double duty.

Brian the Mennonite
Hehehe!!! Loved your comment!!!!!!!

Holly thank you!! I probably need to work on it some more, but that will be later.

Wow- this has "depth". Beautiful textures and COLORS.
Thanks for sharing the quotes-- the Gris and Degas quotes help me too to not feel so bad.

Reminds me of the story of the little mermaid - probably the scene where she is selling her voice to the witch...

You always have a bit of mystery in your work that makes you think. And then you have these great quotes.
Wonderful!

ps: I changed the name of my blog to A Spattering but the URL is the same

I like this mysterious pocket in the sea-scape.

Tony LaRocca said...

That's awesome. The mermaid must be a hell of a siren, to have collected all those skulls. What guys will do for girls, fishy or otherwise.

This mermaid is a little frightening! :)

Hi Issi, thank you so much...of course I will, I do visit as many as I can, sometimes I don't have much time, but it is getting better:)

modroom, don't hang out there too long... or you might end up looking like The Unknown...all skull like and everything!

Tony LaRocca, you know, you are right... god love your gender:)))

merlinprincesse, just a little:) But you know... we don't really know how she came by her collection... maybe she found some in a sunken ship? HA!

vfm4, glad you visited again... it gets lonely in the "Lab" without you:)

I saw this one a while ago and I have been meaning to comment on it. Wow. This is breathtaking. The colours in the background gives a perception of depth. And the richness and mystery of the sea. The centre of attaction, the mermaid is perfectly placed. Great composition.

LDahl said...

Chuang Shyue Chou, thanks very much for the great comment!!! You picked up on the composition, which was the main point of what I was working on...I love to tackle really difficult compositions that are not the usual...but still making them work. I will probably work more on the details, but for now, I was happy with where it was at.
